We won’t know everything the TV series will retain from the books, of course, so a lot of what we’ll be discussing is speculation based on the main plot lines of Fire and Blood. The series has made some changes, but most of the major events in this tumultuous Targaryen era are so far the same. Note, this is based on George R.R. Martin's book series, but could differ from the show. If you don't want anything spoiled about House of the Dragon or Game of Thrones, stop reading now.
Rhaenys “The Queen Who Never Was” Targaryen
Daenerys is Viserys's great-great-great-great-great-great-great granddaughter, with her brother also sharing a name with their ancestor. Despite once being considered as a potential bride for King Viserys, Laena went on to marry his younger brother, Prince Daemon. The first season ends with Corlys backing Rhaenyra's claim to the Iron Throne with his Velaryon navy and control of the shipping lanes through the Stepstones - which he now controls. In the finale of the first season, Rhaenys persuades her husband Lord Corlys to back Rhaenyra's claim to the Iron Throne and the pair join Rhaenyra's Black Council. In the finale of the first season, Aemond is unintentionally responsible for the death of his nephew Prince Lucerys Velaryon. Following King Viserys' second marriage to Lady Alicent Hightower, the realm welcomes the first son of the monarch in the form of Prince Aegon.
Targaryen Family Tree: Everyone Who’s Appeared in ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘Game of Thrones’
Aenys’ eldest son Aegon should have inherited the throne, but Maegor usurped it. Originally from the Valyrian Freehold, the Targaryens were one of forty dragonlord houses who ruled over the lands with the help of their mighty dragons. Intriguingly, during this time, the Targaryens were not a particularly noteworthy house. George R.R. Martin's "Fire and Blood" details the complicated legacy of House Targaryen in Westeros. Now HBO's "House of the Dragon" TV series brings a piece of it to life as we follow the reign of King Viserys through to the civil war that erupted after his death. Aegon was the first-born son of King Viserys and his wife, Alicent Hightower.

At one point, he wanted to build a second Wall in the North, and at other times, he’d rant about overthrowing the Iron Bank. Contrary to popular belief, the reign of Aerys II, who would later become known as the Mad King, began rather fortuitously. Like so many kings before him, Aerys began by clearing out the dead wood from his court and bringing a host of new younger advisors. The King also busied himself with bettering the lives of the smallfolk, whom he had become well acquainted with while squiring for the hedge knight Duncan the Tall. Following the Great Council, Aegon the Unlikely took the throne at the age of 33. Believe it or not, one of the first things Aegon did was to have Bloodraven arrested for the murder of a Blackfyre.
King Viserys I Targaryen
Rhaenyra's marriage to Laenor ends in Episode 7, when she marries her uncle Daemon after Laenor's "death." The pair welcome two sons together during the six-year time jump before Episode 8. They're still going strong when the realm is thrown into conflict in the Season 1 finale, where she is named the rightful Queen days after her nephew Aegon has usurped the Iron Throne. Rhaenys and Corlys have two children who are involved throughout House of the Dragon, a daughter and son named Laena and Laenor. While Laenor ends up marrying Rhaenyra Targaryen to ally the houses, Laena marries Daemon Targaryen and later dies in childbirth. Rhaenys had a stronger claim to the Iron Throne, as the daughter of Jaehaerys' eldest son, Aemon, and Jocelyn Baratheon (an ancestor of early Thrones king Robert Baratheon).

List of Targaryen monarchs in Westeros

Daemon Targaryen is popular with everyone except the people who can make him the next king. The years preceding the beginning of the show witnessed a long period of fighting known as the Faith Militant Uprising that ended only when the reigning king, the cruel Maegor I, died mysteriously. After his death, the only remaining son of the previous king, Jaehaerys I, succeeded to the throne. Aemond (Leo Ashton, and later Ewan Mitchell) is the youngest of Viserys and Alicent’s children and, at the beginning of the series, does not yet have a dragon.

With his dying breath, he legitimized his bastard children, creating the Blackfyre family in the process and sewing the seeds for future rebellions. She's a Targaryen by both blood and marriage – despite being born House Arryn, her mother, Daella, was a Targaryen and a daughter of King Jaehaerys. They have three children together, although their daughter Visenya Targaryen is stillborn. That pretty much covers the major pieces on the chess board at the beginning of the series, without getting too far into what’s ahead. For an idea of just how much history exists between this series and the original, note that Jaehaerys is the fourth Targaryen king to rule the Seven Kingdoms.
Aegon the Conqueror and his sons (2 BC – 37 AC)
Near the end of his life, with no clear heir apparent, he puts together a Great Council to decide which of his descendants will succeed him. Viserys, played in the show by Paddy Considine, is a kind and generous king who brings stability to the realm. However, when it comes to the question of succession, he’s fanciful to a fault in his pursuit of a male heir.
A Great Council was called and the lords of Westeros cast their vote, favouring the male choice of Viserys over Rhaenys or her own son, Ser Laenor Velaryon. After this, King Aegon spent the remainder of his reign consolidating his rule and preparing his son Prince Aenys Targaryen to rule alongside his wife, Lady Alyssa Velaryon. However, he was not the first monarch over multiple kingdoms of Westeros and nor the earliest Targaryen ruler to be mentioned in the series. The House of the Dragon features numerous notable figures from House Targaryen and begins years prior to the events of the main series during the reign of the Old King himself, King Jaehaerys. But in the meantime, why not recap on who’s who in House of the Dragon and how Rhaenyra, her father King Viserys and others are related to their Game of Thrones descendent Daenerys. We know we'll have a second season to look forward to, but as for the state of the Targaryen family before we get there, that's anyone's guess.
This leads to him making a horrible decision that results in the death of his first wife, Aemma, and their newborn son. It also leads to him hedging his bets about who his heir should be after he remarries and has more children. His indecision leads the heirs in question — his daughter Rhaenyra and his son Aegon — to battle for the crown. Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) is the first-born son of Viserys and his second wife, Alicent Hightower. Since he is the oldest boy in the family, he believes he has the right to be the next king.
As the second-born son of Daeron, Aerys was the very definition of the spare, and when his elder brother had not one but two sons, Princes Valarr and Matarys, the idea of him taking the throne seemed laughable. Despite having 13 children, not all survived into adulthood, and because Jaehaerys ruled for 55 years, he managed to outlive all of his kids who did make it out of diapers. This meant that when he reached the winter of his life, he had no heir and had to decide who would inherit his throne.
The only problem is that she is not a man, which leads to drama within the Targaryen family. A dragon rider, Princess Rhaenyra ends up fighting in a civil war against her half-brother Aegon II, the oldest son of Viserys and his second wife, Alicent Hightower. But because of the preceding generation of chaos, the line of succession isn’t clear. So, at the start of House of the Dragon, Jaehaerys summons a council to choose the next heir.
The two Targaryens with the best claim to the throne are his grandson, Viserys, and his granddaughter-slash-grandniece, Rhaenys. They’re both his grandchildren, so both have an equal claim to the throne. But because Westeros has never had a queen as ruler before, the council chooses Viserys to be the next ruler; thus he becomes Viserys I.
Eventually Laenor fakes his death and escapes with Qarl Correy, his lover, to start a new life free of the burdens of nobility. The Targaryens often intermarried to keep the bloodline pure, but that tradition could result in nasty consequences. As Cersei points out in Game of Thrones, when a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin. Aenys Targaryen was a fine leader, but his brother Maegor “The Cruel” Targaryen murdered him. Probate records include wills, fee books, claim registers, legacy records, inheritance records, probate ticklers, and dockets.
Online Court Indexes and RecordsFor the years from 1854 to 1938, the FamilySearch Library has a microfilm series of circuit court records for Los Angeles County and other areas. These include common rule books, equity, equity decree registers, Judgement registers, common law and other items. The only exception being the Targaryens — who managed to survive because they moved with five dragons to Dragonstone just before the event occurred. However, Aerys II's youngest children claimed the Iron Throne as King Viserys III Targaryen and later Queen Daenerys I Targaryen. In the Game of Thrones television series, Jon Snow - who had thought himself to be the bastard son of Lord Eddard Stark - was revealed to have Targaryen lineage. But House of the Dragon will chart her ancestors, so we thought she was worth mentioning.
